Q2 How do I keep my diamond ring clean? What about those jewellery dips?

A 2. I never recommend jewellery dips or cleaners. These products are a mixture of chemicals (some include cyanide!) and are really only a gimmick. Apart from that, they are just not needed! Many people still use toothpaste to clean their jewellery. This is one of the worst things you can use. It's very abrasive and will attract dirt and dust. Any precious jewellery can be cleaned easily with products you are sure to have at home already. Put some hot water in a small bowl with a little dishwashing detergent and a splash of ammonia (cloudy or clear), if you have it. Let your jewellery soak for about 5 minutes, then remove from the water and, if needed, brush lightly with a soft toothbrush. Use a tapping motion with the brush rather than a scrubbing motion, you just want to loosen the dirt from any little crevices in the jewellery. Rinse and dry in a tissue. It is a good idea to take your jewellery to your jeweller about once a year for a thorough checkover and clean. Most jewellers will offer this service free of charge for jewellery they have made. (Please note - do not clean pearls, or opals this way and natural emeralds cannot withstand very hot water)
